How Does Distance Reiki Work? A Step-by-Step Guide

How does distance Reiki work without being in the same room? A clear, honest look at the practice and each step of a 21-minute online session.

"How can Reiki work if we're not even in the same room?" It's one of the most common — and most reasonable — questions people ask before trying a distance session. If you've only ever pictured Reiki as a practitioner's hands resting gently above someone on a treatment table, the idea of receiving it from another city or another country can feel hard to imagine.

This guide explains how distance Reiki is understood within the Reiki tradition, what actually happens from the moment you get in touch to the days after your session, and what you can and can't reasonably expect. It's written to be honest and practical, so you can decide whether it feels right for you.

A note on care: Reiki is a complementary practice for relaxation and well-being. It is not a substitute for medical or mental health care, diagnosis, or treatment. Please continue working with your healthcare providers for any health concerns.

Distance Reiki in a nutshell

Reiki is a Japanese energy practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. The name brings together rei (universal) and ki (life force energy). In a session, the practitioner acts as a channel for this energy, with the intention of supporting balance and the body's own natural capacity to restore itself.

Distance Reiki — also called remote or absent Reiki — is the same practice offered without physical contact. It is a standard part of traditional Reiki training, not a modern add-on: practitioners learn distance techniques at Reiki Level II.

How practitioners understand distance Reiki

Within the Reiki tradition, Reiki is understood as working through intention and connection rather than through touch alone. Even in an in-person session, many practitioners hold their hands slightly above the body rather than on it. Distance Reiki extends that same idea: the practitioner's focused intention, rather than their physical location, is what connects them with the person receiving.

At Reiki Level II, practitioners learn a distance symbol traditionally known as Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, along with techniques for focusing on a specific person and time. In practice, the practitioner usually:

  • —Focuses on the person receiving — often using their name, location, and the intention they've shared
  • —Enters a calm, meditative state before beginning
  • —Channels Reiki with a clear intention, often moving their attention through the body's main energy centres (chakras) and following any intuitive guidance that arises
  • —Closes the session with a moment of gratitude and an intention to release the connection

It's worth being clear and honest here: this is how Reiki practitioners describe and experience the practice. Scientific research has not established a mechanism for how energy might be sent at a distance, and experiences of Reiki are personal and vary widely. What many people do report is that the session itself — 21 minutes of uninterrupted rest with a caring intention behind it — feels calming and meaningful.

You don't need to settle that question before trying it. An open, curious mind is enough.

Step by step: how a distance session works at Full Moon Reiki

Here's what happens from start to finish.

Step 1: You get in touch

You reach out through the contact form and share a little about what you'd like support with. This might be stress, sleep, a relationship, a recurring feeling, a sense of being stuck, or simply a wish for more peace. You don't need to write a lot — a few sentences is plenty — and you only share what you're comfortable sharing.

Step 2: Your session time is arranged

Poornima will be in touch to arrange a time that works with your time zone. Because there's no travel and no video call involved, sessions can fit around your life, whether you're in the US, India, or anywhere else in the world.

Step 3: You settle in at your session time

A few minutes before your session, find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed. Lie down or recline, silence your phone, and keep a blanket nearby. You might set a simple intention, such as "I am open to receiving what I need today." You don't need to meditate, concentrate, or clear your mind.

Step 4: Poornima works with your intention

At the agreed time, Poornima enters a meditative state and begins the session, focusing on you and the intention you've shared. Each session lasts 21 minutes. Depending on what feels most supportive, sessions may draw on distance Reiki, Theta Healing, or both. Your only job is to rest.

Step 5: You rest and receive

During the session, some people notice warmth, gentle tingling, heaviness, or a deep sense of calm. Others feel emotional, see colours, or drift off to sleep. Some notice very little at all. All of these are normal — feeling a lot or very little doesn't mean the session is "working" more or less.

Step 6: You take time to integrate

When the session ends, take a few unhurried minutes before getting up. Drink some water, notice how you feel in your body and mind, and avoid rushing straight into something demanding if you can. Shifts can feel immediate, or unfold quietly over the following days. Jotting down a few notes that evening and the next day can help you notice subtle changes.

Distance Reiki vs in-person Reiki

The core practice is the same; the setting is what changes. People often choose distance sessions because:

  • —You're in your own space, which can make it easier to relax fully
  • —There's no travel, so no rushing to arrive or worrying about getting home
  • —It works across time zones, so you can receive a session from wherever you live
  • —There's no one physically in the room, which some people find makes it easier to let go — especially if they feel shy or anxious in new settings

If anxiety is part of what brings you to Reiki, our guide to distance Reiki for anxiety explores why a distance session can feel especially gentle.

Where Theta Healing fits in

Theta Healing, the other modality offered at Full Moon Reiki, also works through meditation and intention, so it can be offered at a distance in the same way. Where Reiki is largely receptive and restful, Theta Healing focuses on the subconscious beliefs and patterns that may sit beneath recurring challenges. Frequently asked questions

How does distance Reiki work if we're not in the same place?

Within the Reiki tradition, Reiki is understood to work through focused intention and connection rather than physical touch. Practitioners learn distance techniques at Reiki Level II and use them to send Reiki to someone wherever they are. Scientific research hasn't established a mechanism for this, and experiences vary from person to person.

Do I need to be on a video call during a distance Reiki session?

No. You don't need to be on a call or online. At your agreed session time, you simply rest in a quiet, comfortable space while Poornima works with your intention.

What do I need to do during the session?

Nothing beyond resting. You don't need to meditate, concentrate, or clear your mind. If thoughts come and go, that's fine. It's also completely fine to fall asleep.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

You don't need any particular beliefs or experience. Many people arrive curious or a little sceptical. An open mind and a willingness to relax are all that's needed.

How long is a distance Reiki session and how much does it cost?

Each distance session at Full Moon Reiki lasts 21 minutes and costs $50. Sessions are available to clients worldwide.
